Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 27 March 2019

    In the four by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress (ANC) retained one seat won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, and won one seat, and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained two seats it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections. New ward councillors are as follows:

    EASTERN CAPE

    Nomnikelo Yehana of the ANC in Ward 21 in Nyandeni Municipality – EC155. The ANC retained the seat won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 65.27% of the votes cast compared to 81.45% in 2016. Voter turnout yesterday was 42.47% compared to 47.94% in 2016.

    GAUTENG

    Andries Stephanus Eksteen of the DA in Ward 18 in Mogale City Municipality – GT18. The DA retained the seat won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 69.40% of the votes cast compared to 89.35% in 2016. Voter turnout yesterday was 30.39% compared to 76.69% in 2016.

    Lynette Estelle Du Toit of the DA in Ward 21 in the Mogale City Municipality – GT21. The DA retained the seat won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 70.61% of the votes cast compared to 89.45% in 2016. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.01% compared to 77.48% in 2016.

    KWAZULU-NATAL

    Thandanani Iward Zungu of the ANC in Ward 18 in AbaQulusi Municipality – KZN263. The ANC won the seat previously held by the IFP with 44.08% of the votes, compared, to the 55.38% of the votes won by the IFP in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 47.99% compared to 56.81% in 2016.
