Drunk driving has topped the list of crimes recorded in Johannesburg for April.
Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba released the Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) crime statistics on Tuesday.
The top six crimes recorded included driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of hijacked or stolen motor vehicles, public violence, possession of unlicensed firearms, reckless and negligent driving as well as the possession or dealing in drugs, the latest stats reveal.
Mashaba says the monthly stats assessment is a necessary evaluation for the department to remain accountable and transparent.
The South African Cities Network’s report, which had been released in April suggested, that Joburg was one of the most dangerous cities in the country with robbery being the most prevalent crimes.
Earlier in May, JMPD announced the launch of a dedicated undercover unit to respond to what the cameras record.
The City of Joburg has more than 400 CCTV surveillance cameras operating in the Joburg inner city, with a new undercover unit of 80 JMPD officers deployed to solely deal with illegal activity picke
