An 18 months old child has been killed after fire engulfed their shack in Alexandra on Sunday evening at No 15-16th Ave.

It is understood that the mother of the deceased left the child under the supervision of a child (5) as she went to buy food from a local store. The older child managed to flee the devastating fire and called for help.

The family spokesperson Thembisani Ntsibanyoni is appealing to the public to assist them with transport fees to take the corpse to home.

She says the family is poverty stricken, and would not manage to ferry the body to Mpumalanga for burial.

Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema has described the incident as traumatic.

“What happened is very painful, I font think any parent would want to go through, it is very sad to witness the incident”

Alexandra police spokesperson captain Stephen Malatji says they have opened an inquest docket to determine the cause of the fire. No arrests have been made.
