Government clinics are assessed in terms of Ideal clinic standards and river park clinic Is one of the few in the country that got platinum status (the highest a clinic could achieve). Said MMC for health and social development in the City of Johannesburg Dr Mpho Phalatse

The clinic which was re-opened early 2017, last year established substance abuse treatment center where those suffering from drugs could be assisted for free. And currently the health department in Jo’burg is busy turning River park clinic into a center of excellence for primary health care.

The clinic is now busy with Wits University and University of Pretoria to turn the clinic into an academic clinic, Alexandra community will have access to academic care at community level. The process of referral from community clinic to Edenvale hospital is a long process and as normal clinics don’t have fulltime doctors. Riverpark has a full time specialist, former head of internal medicine at Charlotte Maxeke and Wits University, after retiring chose to come to Riverpark to turn the clinic into an academic facility, creating link between the clinic and universities so that everything of academic nature is that is needed will be provided by the universities.

Riverpark clinic also has established the program with the help of the city, Expanded Social Package (ESP) it’s a database of people who can’t afford to buy healthy food, when your registered in the ESP your on the cities indigent register, when the are opportunities in the city they go look for people in the register first, one of the ESP benefits is discount when paying bills (Water, property rates, electricity, taxes etc.). You are also able to access the cities food bank, if you don’t afford food you can be referred to the city’s social development’s food resilience unit and you’ll be assisted with food parcels so you could eat health. Through the same unit if you own a home garden you can receive seeds, skill and tools to grow your plants. Residents can register for the program at the clinic.

The clinic will be adding a nutritionist in partnership with the city, she’ll have a pop up kitchen once in a while to teach people how you cook your food in a healthy manner “ Sometimes you can have healthy food, the vegetables and all but cook them in an unhealthy manner and it ends up being an unhealthy meal.” Said MMC Dr Phalatse.

With the help of Sports and Recreation aerobics have also been added at the clinic. Many diseases are linked into less exercising so the clinic will be hosting aerobics.
