Deputy minister of police Cassel Mathale with presence of national and provincial commissioner of police Khehla Sithole and Lt Gen Mawela visited Alexandra to address the issue of crime in the township on Sunday 16 February.
Former MEC of community safety in Gauteng, chair of chairs Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane programmed the meeting, making sure everything ran in order adding humor to the imbizo.
Speaking to the public Mathale who once lived in Alex said they’re doing no one a favor by coming to address the public’s issues “we made a commitment that we’ll be the government that is based on the will of the people, speaks on behalf of the people, govern with the authority of the people and get the mandate from the people everyday not after 5 years”.
The public, police and the prosecuting authority need to work together and prepare cases in terms of how they should be prepared “ working together with the prosecution authority there’s no case that will be thrown out of court because it would not be having substantial evidence or badly prepared” explained the deputy minister.
Many people who rose to raise their issue complained of police vans that are seen at places where drugs are sold and according to the public they’ve seen police officers taking bribes from drug lords, states resources being used for non-work related matters and police brutality.
There are Alex residents who came up with solutions of decreasing crime in Alex and make police’s job easier in apprehending those who are involved in criminal activities, the police commissioner General Khehla Sithole promised to look at them and work together with the community in making things easier for the police.
According to Mathale the fourth industrial revolution should come up with systems that will make things easy for police “We must have systems that the police should use to detect if a person has committed any crime in other areas as soon as they take their fingerprints at police station.” Said Mathale.
In conclusion Mathale said better life for all shouldn’t be for Sandton people only, the government must change the status quo of Alexandra.
