Pick n Pay and Feed the Nation Foundation have begun delivering food and stationery hampers from their Back-to-School Food Drive for learners at 40 schools nationwide to the value of R200,000.
Local Pick n Pay stores also set up collection trolleys in February and customers generously donated food or stationery that were added to the R5,000 hampers donated to each school.
The Back-to-School Food Drive beneficiary schools belong to the Pick n Pay School Club, a public-private educational platform that works with a network of schools to reach over two million learners and their families each year.
“We have been working with our school network throughout lockdown and with the support of Feed the Nation Foundation, we are happy to help provide some immediate relief for learners in need with basic food and stationery essentials,” says Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, transformation director at Pick n Pay.
“The reality is that thousands of children go to school hungry every day. This number has grown during lockdown as parents or guardians have lost their jobs. These hampers will be used to support school feeding schemes, local charities, or vulnerable learners and their families.”
Customers can donate towards the Feed the Nation Foundation any time at any till point in our stores. All these funds are spent directly on helping feed our nation and those left most vulnerable during this crisis, with a focus on schools and their learners.
