Is it a coincidence that Mamelodi Sundowns announced a new four-and-a-half-year deal for goalkeeper Denis Onyango just two days after coach Pitso Mosimane hinted at a possible retirement from international football?
Still quite fresh from being voted in CAF’s Africa Best Eleven alongside the Liverpool duo of Mohammed Salah (Egypt) and Sadio Mane (Senegal) last month, the 33-year-old goalkeeper was rewarded by the club for his loyalty and “working his way up to being the undisputed No.1” on the continent.
But it now appears as though there have been talks of him calling time with The Cranes of Uganda, as suggested by Mosimane on Saturday night.
“He’s been unfortunate this year with injuries,” the coach told the media after Downs’ 1-1 draw against log leaders Bidvest Wits, a game Onyango did not finish because of an injury.
“I heard a little bit from the other goalkeepers that he probably thinks that the Afcon (in June) should really be his last. He is 33 now hey? And maybe he must focus on Sundowns, especially when you have injuries like this. But we support Uganda – I am not saying he should not play. But sometimes they call him for Comoros, you know what I am trying to say. They must save him because I would like for him to continue. But that’s just the way it is.”
Onyango has over 60 caps for his native country and two years ago helped Uganda qualify for their first ever Afcon in nearly 40 years.
Should Onyango carry on playing for The Cranes or focus on Sundowns?
